Spring is on the way in Dorset
Enjoy a scenic walking experience
Late winter in Dorset has a certain character that suits a garden walk beautifully. Soft light, crisp coastal air; the backdrop for an afternoon of exploring and the simple pleasure of taking in your surroundings.
Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens’ unique microclimate, shaped by its position near the sea, creates a more-than-comfortable environment for walking in the colder months. You can explore at your own pace, pause where the views open out, and enjoy a quieter side of one of Dorset’s best-loved garden destinations.

Walking routes with character at Abbotsbury
Secluded pathways through a subtropical setting
A walk through Abbotsbury feels varied from one section to the next. Snaking pathways that lead through mature planting and sheltered corners, then open into wider spaces with long sightlines. The Gardens span 30 acres and include an extensive collection of plants from around the world, so every route has a strong sense of place and a distinct atmosphere.
You can take time to notice details in the planting, stop for photographs on the 36-metre rope bridge that spans our largest pond, and enjoy the sense of discovery that comes from moving through different garden areas. For scenic walks in Dorset that feel peaceful and memorable, Abbotsbury is a must-visit in the build-up to spring.

Sculptures to discover along the way
New artworks by Brendon Murless in the garden landscape
Recent additions to the Gardens give visitors another reason to take their time and soak up their surroundings. Four new sculptures by contemporary figurative sculptor Brendon Murless are now installed across the site, positioned among planting and pathways.
Four pieces, entitled Serenity, Emergence, Listen to the Forest II, and Queen Bee, bring a distinct presence to their setting, with the human form and the natural world held in thoughtful balance. Queen Bee, located in the Victorian Garden, draws on the movement and resilience of wild honey bees and adds a striking focal point early in a garden walk.

A well-deserved café stop
Warm drinks and relaxed lunch options
After a beautifully scenic walk, the Gardens café provides a welcome place to settle in. The wooden veranda and courtyard are surrounded by subtropical planting, so even a short break feels tucked away from the outside world.
The café serves homemade light snacks, savoury pastries, sandwiches, soups, and cakes, alongside hot and cold drinks and a selection of local beers and ciders. Gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan options are available, and the team can help with dietary requirements.
