Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens is entering one of its most uplifting times of the year.
The first signs of spring colour are already appearing across the 30-acre landscape, bringing fresh energy to the winding paths, sheltered glades and dramatic planting that make the Gardens such a distinctive place to visit on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.
For visitors arriving in spring, there is a real sense of the season gathering pace. Camellias are in bloom, magnolias are opening in all their elegance, and the Gardens begin to shift into brighter colour and softer light.
After the quieter winter months, this is the point when the subtropical setting starts to feel especially vibrant again, with new growth, blossom and texture around every turn.

The Gardens wake up in spring
Early colour and fresh growth bring a new feel to every walk
Spring at Abbotsbury has its own unique atmosphere – with each garden area offering something slightly different as the season develops. Sheltered by the site’s unique microclimate and shaped by its position close to the coast, the planting responds in a way that gives early spring visitors a great deal to enjoy.
Camellias are one of the highlights of the season, bringing rich colour to the Gardens with beautifully formed blooms set against glossy evergreen foliage. Magnolias add a different kind of spectacle, with large flowers creating drama and vibrancy.
The wider setting adds to that feeling, too. Across the Gardens, the changing season touches the borders, wooded areas, open lawns and winding, sheltered pathways. It all comes together to create the kind of garden experience that encourages you to slow down, look around and enjoy the unmistakable colours of spring.
There’s also the chance to experience one of the longest rope bridges in the UK – which traverses a vibrant aquatic habitat, home to rare and exotic planting alongside native wildlife. A natural viewpoint that’s hard to beat.
